The more Hook considers his erratic behaviour, the more depressed he becomes. The crazy thing is, when he was insane he felt happy; now he’s sane it’s like everything has come crashing down. This is life’s great secret, he thinks: everyone is insane. It’s the only way humans can cope with everything.
When he thinks about it objectively, Hook’s leaving his wife for someone less wealthy, less well-connected and (to a neutral) probably less attractive. He doesn’t care. In fact, if anything, it confirms what he already knows: he’s found what he’s been looking for.
