At beautiful fairytale city of Stalingrad 16 December 1942 1 lose small left toe to frostbite. Next evening as planes and fire light up snowflake sky same location when unwrapping bandage two more toes on right foot detach and sit like snails in oil-cloth. No math genius even I understand these rates of loss unsustainable. But no way to leave hole: superhuman eyes of Zeitsev follow me everywhere, even into dreams like starry-eyed lover.
